Dec. 20, 1860- South Carolina secedes from the Union, in the following months Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas seceded.

Feb.9, 1861- The Confederate States of America is formed with Jefferson Davis as president.external image davis.jpg

April 12, 1861- General Pierre Beauregard attacks the Union at Fort Sumter and the Civil War begins.

April 17, 1861- Virginia secedes follwed by Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

July 21, 1861- General "Stonewall" Jackson fires at Bull Run and the Union is defeated.external image stonewall_jackson_2.jpeg

Apil 6-7, 1861- Confederates attack at Shiloh against General Ulysses S. Grant of the Union.

Sept. 17, 1862- Bloodiest day in U.S. history, General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate Army fired at Antietam in Maryland.

Dec. 13, 1862- The army of the Potomac under General Burnside is defeated at Fredricksburg, VA.

January 1, 1863- Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves in Confederate lands.

March 3, 1863- U.S. Congress issues the draft.

May 1-4, 1863- The Union army under "Fighting Joe" Hooker is defeated at Chancellorsville, VA.external image hooker.jpg

May 10, 1863 General "Stonewall" Jackson dies from his wounds and is replaced by General Meade.

July 1-3, 1863- The Confederates lose the battle against the Union in Gettysburg, PN.

July 4, 1863- Confederates surrender in Vicksburg, MS, giving up the Mississsippi River after 6 weeks of siege.

Sept. 2, 1864- Atlanta GA is captured by William T. Sherman.


Nov. 15, 1864- After Sherman destorys Atlanta's warehouse and railroads, Sherman and 62,000 soldiers march to sea destroying everything in path.

March 4, 1865- Lincoln is innagurated and says' "With malice towards none; with charity for all... let us strive on to finish the work we are in...to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselve, and with all nations."

April 9, 1865- General Lee surrenders at Appomattox Court House in VA.external image 300px-AppomattoxCourtHouse.jpg

April 14, 1865- Lincoln and wife, Mary, attend "Our American Cousin" at Fords Theatre; where Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, an actor.

Aprl 15 1865- Abraham Lincoln dies and V.P. Andrew Jackson becomes the new president.

April 26, 1865- John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln's assassin, is shot and killed in a barn in VA.external image booth-john-wilkes.jpg






In May- The rest of the Confederate's army surrender and the Nation is a whole again.
